Good site that Christian - as an aside, reading Legionnaire by Simon Murray (Algeria, but he does mention rations), he states that there were 2 types - Muslim and European. I wonder if that practice was carried out in Indo China?

I've got one of their ration boxes. They are pretty nice. Got it off E-Bay several years ago. Wish I was set up and computer saavy enough to replicate labels. But I'm too old school for that! I thought I read somewhere that they did carry the muslim rations to Indochina. But I can't remember where? Was it in "Hell in a Very Small Place"? Did Fall make mention of the situation of not being able to get the right rations to the right units in preparation back in Hanoi??? (which was an overall problem as we all know for a lot of things). I just can't remember...... Renault

Fall does talk about rations in "Hell...". There were six different varieties: Euro, N African, African, Viet, T'ai and PIM(POW).
I can't find the page, but Fall mentions that the garrison at DBP ended up towards the end living largely on rice with fish sauce and possibly some meat. There was an effort to prevent scurvy by trying to get the men to at least eat onions.

I don't have the book handy, but it's in the chapter that concerns the fighting for the Five Hills, around April 10th-15th or so.
