Gents: Firstly, happy new years tp everyone. Secondly, I am looking for references to the colour of drawstrings associated with berets. I have seen the reference but I can't find the darn thing. Were the drawstrings similar to the foulard with different colours denoting different units? In anyone has any insight on this, merci en advance. Steven

The two references to this particular pattern in La Legion Etrangere en Indochine mention it coming from the 4th Bn 2 REI being offered to or from the Vietnamese of this dissolved battalion. The other statement in the same book mention it being issued for L'Armee Marocaine/ army of Moracco.
In theory, the Legion beret was to have two colours being red and green although the majority of colour photos have black drawstrings. Finally there is some mention of Legion berets also have yellow and red drawstrings.

Except for the units you mentioned, all other beret strings were black. Even within the Legion, black seems to have been by far dominant in Indo. I've never seen evidence of colored drawstrings in Algeria.
