Shortly due to take delivery of a SoF para chinstrap and rivets which I shall be adding to a ww2 US liner. In anticipation of this, what size holes should I be making and precisely where?

Perhaps checking with Murray WWII helmets might be a start- a small home operation out of Wisconsin with an owner who really knows his stuff! He might be able/willing to give you the advice needed to complete your project. Bon Chance! ---Toussant

J. Murray Militaria is the go-to for rehabing old helmets. I've purchased from him on a few occasions. Good to go.

My go to is Jacob Caputo at Alexander and Son Restorations. Also excellent work.

If you decide to do the work yourself, I'll take pictures of my old issue jump helmet. It's an M1 and I would think the rivets would be in the same place on the liner. I'll see about comparing them to my French reference books tomorrow.

Anyone have any fix for an M1 helmet that fits too tightly? This thing is snug to begin with, and putting a net on is impossible.

Are you trying to put the net between the shell and the liner or over the shell and the liner? If the liner fits the shell properly, there isn't enough room for a issue two colour net, the helmet covers which came out later were a tight enough fit.
I've been away for the last few days sorting out a potential motorcycle sale, hence the delay with rivet locations for jump helmets.

I hope these are of some help. The pics are from my M1 jump helmet. The foam pad at the rear of the liner was mandatory for the riggers checks as one has to protect his pumpkin. We retired the M-1s in the early 90's. The two colour cam net is old issue while the inner tube is from a 1940's tire. I can take measurements as required, now I have to just compare them to the French para helmets. Steven

This is a 1/4" OD mesh cover. How do you suggest I secure the edge without tucking it between the liner and shell?

Lew:
Not sure, I think the only reason mine stays together is the chin strap which holds the liner to the shell. Lacking that pattern chin strap securing snap, you might have to thread string around the end of the net which might be uncomfortable when worn.
