I know many US jeeps made their way into Indo theatre, but were the M37 or the WWII Dodge Command Car brought over and in use? Any input or photos to prove would be greatly appreciated! I have my pie in the sky dream to get one of these vehicles, but would like one that I could possibly multipurpose for several different events.

Vietnam Tracks, Armor In Battle 1945-1975 has some nice pictures of wheeled vehicles. Less tanks and tracks: the Coventry Mk 1 armoured car; Humber scout cars; Panhards; M3A1 scout car; M-8s; M5 Halftracks; GMC trucks; with the standard deuce and a half, 3/4 ton and 1/4 ton. Missed out on a beautiful Dodge '43 Command Car returned from Germany- older resto, but super shape for $23000. I was moving my daughter back home and missed the opportunity- dang kids!

Sorry for the tardy post but was that command car in civilian hands?
Post-war, many units remained in Germany on occupation duties for a long time, or at least got reflagged. So the same barracks for occupied for a long time by American troops. Sometimes units had obsolete pieces of equipment, presumably kept for display, memorial or curiosities. My son, stationed in Germany with the 1st Armored Division, said his battalion had, I think, a half-track. I believe they had gone out of service by the early 50s. As far as I know, there are few army units there now, even though my son-in-law was stationed there, oh, five years ago but he was Air Force. Anyway, I wonder what happened to all that unofficial equipment when units came back to the states? The division that I was with overseas left a lot of its equipment there when we came back in 1968. They called it pre-positioning. I guess they thought we might be going back sometime.

Most Commands were already given to other Allied armies during WW2, and after the war loads went to the French and Norwegians. Same with the Scout Cars.

Believe it or not, I can't positively identify any of the artillery at the beginning of the film. But one of those transport airplanes sure looks like an old Junkers (not an old junker, although it might be) three-engine transport.

The French received a bunch from ex-Luftwaffe stocks, and also produced their own. By the time of Algeria, I don't know of any in-use other than for logisitics. Para drops were all from C-47s and Nord 2501s. |
