Having read that in the Tonkin area the winter temperatures can get quit cold especially at night. So what did the french issue in the form of sweaters, heavy jackets Ect. Or did they have to make do with many layers of standard kit.

In Indochina, sweaters (pull en laine). Mle. 49 is the model, I do believe. North African troops had djellabas. Other than that, troops would have had to make due with wool blankets and le toile de tente Mle. 51.
Algeria was a different story, with the veste metelasée Mle. 50, parka montaine/coupe vente Mle. 50, tour de cou being issued in abundance. Locally-made and army-issued djellabas were popular.
