In case there's interest here. D. F. Smith Historic has reproduced the Mle 1935 kepi. There are two models. The authentic, and the excelsior. I purchased the excelsior model and it met and exceeded expectations. Now they're both a bit pricey, but the quality is excellent. This model kepi, for you Legionnaire types, is good for pre WWII through Indo. While the Mle 46 kepi is good for Indo on it's nice to have the option of a older model for the aciens. Craig

Very interesting, and he's only a couple hours up the road from me.

He was great to do business with. I also picked up a 19th century wallet repro. Again excellent craftsmanship.

An interesting side note, I ran into Don (D.F. Smith) at March on Rome VIII this past Saturday. Really nice guy and, and had a great German impression.

Don Smith is an artist with great skill and greater knowledge but his mdle 35 kepi is based on a private purchase model and varies slightly from the standard issue. It is still an excellent piece of kit though. Modele 35 kepis were cheaply and basically made which is why very few originals have made it through to the present day outside of museum collections.

I can live with that. It's better than usin' a Mle 46 ifor a WW2 impression because there's no other alternative.

I completely agree. Mle 46 will only cover you for senior (career) NCOs. I had to make my own Mle 35.

"I had to make my own Mle 35."...perhaps a tutorial on that might be in order...

I originally researched the Mle 35 kepi to help other reenactors to improve their portrayals with an accurate kepi without breaking their bank balances. I had my brains picked on the subject and the research was turned over to a professional manufacturer who now charges a couple of hundred bucks. By all means message me if you want to try making your own, guys.

Still need to pull the trigger on this. Especially his excelsior model. I wonder if he makes it in size 8? Hey, no critiques on the size of my skull, I do have a 4.0 Masters in Education. Okay, okay, I also have a very thick Irish American skull...

Toussant, he should be able to make any size. You give him your size and he will make it. Don's extremely busy so the lead time might be a while.
