In this picture I know that is General Gilles, but who is the civilian and what is the situation? I found this photo at an antique store this past summer. I believe it's a French Indochina War photo. It was in a box among a mixture of WWII and U.S. Vietnam kodak pictures. I think it's a good find. www.flickr.com/photos/130970129@N06/21790276019/in/dateposted-public/

It's definitely Gilles and it's definitely Indochine. I just did a Google search for prominent politicians of the time nothing matched.

Thanks Lew. No one knew anything about it at the antique store. It was buried among over a hundred photos and had no identifying information on the back. Most of the other photos were WWII & U.S. Vietnam Naval Airwing and old Army Air Corp images. Strange find but interesting.

My first thought was France or Germany during exercises. Uniforms and background are not really like Indo.

Both Mle. 46 and Mle. 47 uniforms were common in Indo, but the scenery and Gilles not being in his characteristic British Windproof uniform have me thinking you are right.

It's very dry where ever they are. The ground under foot is cracked mud. Next to no trees.

Still doesn't rule out Indochina as there were deforested areas and distinct wet and dry seasons. Still, the TTA uniforms and the presence of a government official point to a European location.

Definitely Europe,General J. Gilles is with Defense Minister Pierre Billotte (6th October 1955 - 1st February 1956). At that time Gal Gilles was CIC for French Airborne troops and for the 25e DIAP as well. He was appointed CIC for the OP in Suez in November 1956.
