Hi again, the board friends!
Just curious if anybody has seen any photographic evidence of french soldiers wearing "medical" helmets (marked with red crosses).
I don´t remember to have seen anyone, but....
Thanks in advance, amigos!

Not that I can recall seeing. I'll browse through my photos again just to make sure.

I think I remember some rear echelon types wearing them, but line medics and forward surgical types did not wear them. It would be a great way to be singled out as a higher-value target. Same reason one doesn't see rank indicators too often.

For those who remember the old Ballantine's illustrated history series- Dien Bien Phu- by John Keegan. There is a photo marked Dr. Grauwin prepares for an amputation, there is an orderly with what looks like a small Red Cross on his helmet. And that I have ever come across.

I think I know the picture of which you speak. It's not surprising that the medical staff of the ACMs and ACPs at Dien Bien Phu would have such helmets. They spent most of their time underground anyway.

I've got a copy of the book. I'll have to take a gander when I get home.

Just looked up the photo in "Hell In a Very Small Place" and I'd have to say that it's the guys rank badge on his helmet, looks like the netting is torn around it, and that he's a lieutenant (two horizontal bars). But, I can't be certain as the photo is rather low res

You very well could be right that it a rank badge, not the best photo for sure. Was rank on helmets just an Offr. practice?

I'm not sure if only officers did it, as I have seen several photos of officer's rank painted on helmets but no photos of enlisted ones

I've never seen any rank below lieutenant (two bars) on helmets. Seems to have most common with captains.

Me neither, hence the skepticism. Camo covers? Sure, during Algeria. Helmet net? No problemo. Paint? Not feelin' it.

I'm very skeptical about it myownself... I agree with Steve, just not feelin' it with the paint... That's something I've not seen, other than some ranks and para brevets, there's no paint on the helmets.
