Although we normally eschew politics on our forum, the results of last night's election deserve a quick squib on the future of gun ownership.
Last night the U.S. lurched to the right, which bodes well not only for the electorate (in my estimation) but for gun owners and reenactors. The House is now staunchly Republican and the Senate remains in the hands of a tenuous Democratic majority in name only; Blue Dog Dem's will join with Republicans to give the Senate a slight tilt to the right, but only so. For gun owners and reenactors in the States, this provides a positive outlook for the next two years:
1. Anti-gun legislation will die on arrival in committee. Anti-gun legislation will not even appear in House Committee docket(s).
2. Current legislation pending to stop the flow of automatic and non-automatic ("dummy gun" replica guns), is now dead. Like the assault gun ban (c. 1994), this bill will be sunsetted (from what I have read) and dummy guns, specifically French firearms should begin an uninteruppted flow from Europe. Most state legislatures swung right last night; only California has laws that do not permit the importion of functional automatic and semi-automatic weapons across state lines. Most state legislation should sunset in the next two years.
3. With future anti-gun legislation DOA and pro-gun legislation most likely DOA as well (Obama will simply VETO any pro-gun bills that arrive on his desk), we have acheived what the Founding Fathers so graciously designed for us: gridlock, which is, in and of itself, a protection against over zealous government.
