Were these used in Indochina? If they were, can anyone provide photo sources?

Mick,
It is quite possible that British Bergen rucksacks were used in Indochina. However, be mindful of the various Alpine and army 'bergen' style rucksacks used by the French forces throughout the Indochina war. They referred to these packs as 'Bergam' and they were copied very heavily from the British Bergen. There is also the TAP Mle 50/53 metal framed rucksack which saw limited services from 1953 onwards with airborne and possibly GCMA units, although it was not popular. This was very similar in exterior detailling to the British pattern.

Just to revive this older post, anyone found evidence of this piece of kit? The reason I ask is that SOF out of Britain has them for sale. It would be nice to have a period correct piece to haul gear into camp... Merci! ---Toussant

I don't have my reference material with me, but I'm inclined to say "no" since they were such a specialty item amongst British forces in WW2. I wouldn't expect to see them in Indo, but I wouldn't be surprised if a few found their way there.
