Bonsoir:
Sportsmans Guide has Navy Blue French Berets from 1950's-1960's for sale. They appear to be the 3 part Beret. Who would be able to use those?
They advertise them as Legion, but we know that is not correct.
Merci,
Legionnaire

It's most likely airborne, but I remember hearing that French Marines wore them EARLY in the war (not sure if this is true).

Actually, first the metropolitan airborne units (I,II & III/1er RCP-1er Bataillon Parachutiste de Choc-10e BPCP) wore the dark blue/black beret and then the cornflower blue pattern was worn...

marsouin,
When did this blue beret come into service? This must have been directly after the Second World War, as I assumed the British maroon beret was worn for some time after French Para's from the SAS brigade were transferred over to the French Army....?

Cornflower blue pattern was used from end of 1947 on... Regarding the maroon beret looks like a few british made ones were worn. Most of the berets were locally made and issued to the Demi Brigade Para SAS upon its return from Laos on 27th June 1946. Official wear is confirmed by a decree on 02nd February 1948.

My understanding is that the French SAS wore Blue/black until reorganized near the end of the war when they switched to red.

1e RCP was equipped with a dark blue beret until 1952, when the béret Mle. 52 seule partie (one piece) in bleu roi (royal blue) was introduced for all Metropolitan airborne units. 1e Choc had a black beret with proprietary insignia until the switch. The dark blue beret would be correct for all regular infantry and artillery unit- Troupes de Marine or otherwise- after 1958. Before that, most of those units used the calot/bonnet de police/sidecap/garrison cap.
