I'm no expert, but I would say it is a bit late for Indo. The helmet cover looks pretty modern. I can't recall seeing any photos of M51's in Indo - has anyone seen them?
Cheers, LeM.

The so called "salade" is too young, but generally M1951 helmets made it to Indochine. Their production really started in 1951, but obviously the old US helmets were to be issued first. I haven't found pics of the normal M1951 being worn in Indochine, but according to "Les Troupes Aeroportees Francaises en Indochine 1945/1956" the first M1951 TAP helmets appeared in Indochine in late 1953. In another forum somebody posted the following Militaria Mag pics of M1951 helmets being worn in DBP. It is also a very nice article on M1951 helmets: passionmilitaria.conceptforum.net/la-guerre-d-algerie-f200/le-casque-francais-modele-1951-t2060.htmWith best regards, Turner

There are many, many existing pics of M51 helmets in use in Indochina from about 52 on. Even with the colonial forces. And I know the crappy cover isn't correct. But my real question is with the so called "plastic" liner thing? And the chinstrap. I'm thinking these are 70's vintage..... But in actuality a '51 shell is a '51 shell regardless of date. I do not think there is any difference in their manufufacturing.... Just curious to see if anyone else had seen one of these particular ensembles. I was thinking at this price I'd order one just to see what it was like. I can always use it ofr Op For..... Renault

And I know the crappy cover isn't correct. Renault I ordered my helmet from Tranchee and got the salade with it although I didn't want to have it. Plastic liners were also made in the 50s. Here some more pics: Une autre photo en Indochine avec des casques Mle 1951 TTA , deux officiers vietnamiens du 5è BPVN qui a été crée le 1 septembre 1953 " légionnaires en tenue de combat lors d’un départ en opération en 1954 en Indochine " Remarquez qu’ils ont des caques Mle 51 TTA vu l’évasement de ceux-ci par rapport aux USM 1 , les tenues sont des treillis 47 " tirailleurs marocains du I / 3ème RTM , s’élancent à l’attaque de Phu Nho Quan le 4 novembre 1953 " Pour moi les trois gars sur la gauche ont des casques Mle 5 from: passionmilitaria.conceptforum.net/la-guerre-d-indochine-f6/casque-mle-51-1er-type-t2352.htmHere is mon Lieutenant with M1951 helmet: Regards, Turner

Answers my question about the plastic liners. Only older ones I had seen were the pressed composition style. I may just order one pay day!!!!! What is there to loose other than $14.95 + shipping? Thanks Turner for the insight! Renault

Hey Fedi ordered 3 of these helmets last week and they came in yesterday. I'm suprised he hasn't posted anything on them here. He's got one for me. He said all the pots are early 50's dated, like 52-53. And one of the liners is dated 54. The other two were dated 62.
So that works for me!!!!!!

...and the price is also very good. Had to pay €20 for each of my two M51 helmets. Turner

ECPAD is a great source but also good old google search works fine for me! ...and don't forget the boooks and French Militaria Magazines! (Though my scanner does not work!!) With best regards, Turner

My helmet and liner are both dated 52. I actually like the M51. It kind of grows on you after a while.

mine are:
shell 1962 J.DUBOIS & FILS VINCENNES, fine texture, sewn tan chin strap, fixed bail. liner 1971 SIA Le Mans, plastic, green suspension (like Vietnam US M1), green leather chin strap, no neckstrap.
and
shell 1953 FRANCK AUBERVILLIERS, rough texture, sewn tan chin strap, swivel bail. liner 1953 (unreadable) plastic, tan suspension (like WWII US M1), brown leather chin strap, nonadjustable neckstrap.
I prefer the US M1 and the Adrian helmets as they fit my egghead much better than the M1951 helmets. ;D
