Gents, I am looking for info on the units of the Armee d'Afrique that served in Indochina. Are there any books that you might recommend, as well as sutlers for French items? I am looking into putting together an Indochina kit, but something different from the Legion.

Shaun:
First, welcome to our site!
Second, *any* Osprey book on the Indochina War with Mike Chappel or Martin Windrow will cover any of the North African units that served, 1946-54. And I should say that if that is an area that you cover or have an interest in - fantastic. There is so much info out there on Legion that North African units have a tendancy to be overlooked. Amazon.com has everything you need at excellent prices. Just type in "French Indochina War" and you'll bring up some excellent sources. If you need specifics, just contact me or anyone on here with any questions you have. [ Unlike most forums there is no elitism here. If you have a question: ask it. We'll help you out. ]
Oui? ;D

There was an overwhelming number of African units serving in Indochina. Everything from Moroccan Goumiers to Senagelese Artillerymen, to Algerian Tirailleurs! Very famous regiments with many battle honors! Engineer's, motor transport units, simply the works! I would find a unit to represent. From your "Zouave" moniker, I'd suggest the 7e RTA, (Regiment Tirailleurs de Algeriens), a famous unit with many battle ribbons from the world wars. They were at Dien Bien Phu. As far as kit, the African units were outfitted in the same manner as the regular union and legion units. As Martini stated, photos abound. There are some good pics on the French military website; www.ecpad.fr/Just click on the icon on the upper right corner, and it will take you to lists of photos by era. Bonne chance et bienvenue! If I remember correctly the African gunners at Dien Bien Phu earned some particularly high praise for their efforts, not least when everyone else was running from the VM and they fired their guns over open sights, halting the VM after a couple of hours of point blank fire. I believe Lt Brunbrouck was given the Legion d'honnour. They're given some good coverage by Pierre Schoendorffer in his movie DBP.

That's right, Cookie!!!!!
That's the's only scene I've seen from the movie (You Tube) and it is awesome to see them firing the 105's, "Line of Sight"!
Waay Too Cool!
We have a 75mm (M1941 Rock Island Arsenal) in our unit now. I'm sure someone will post pics of it soon. Hopefully we'll have it at an event soon......
