Hello all, What wet weather gear (if any) was used in theatre? I wondered if ponchos or something equivalent were used in any number by colonial and legion para battalions. I haven't seen any photos depicting them.
Also, were the tan coloured shelter quarters/zelts issued in Indochine, or were these a little later? I was wondering what tentage was typical.
Thanks in advance. David.

From what I've seen no particular wet weather gear was issued. The tan shelter halves were issued throughout the mid to late stages of the war with the 'wavy pattern' lizard camo ones coming in at the very end.

While Le refuge cantonne (zelts or shelter quarters) can be used as ponchos they must be fastened correctly to be of any use. Simply slipping one over your head will not keep you dry, as many of us know. I would suggest a square of oil cloth for rain protection when at rest. It can be place over you to keep the worst off, if you are on the move you will find the rain does stop and you can walk your self dry. Better to worry about a dry and clean weapon when the rain stops.

I've found a source for the French plain tan zelts on Belgian Ebay if anyone is interested in them. Could be useful in a bivouac in our 'British Standard Horrible' climate. Cheers, David.

...and once again: You could also try tranchee for the tents! Regards, Turner
