That was a fine helicopter for the time. It was appreciated in Algeria because it could get close enough to the ground in desert scrub to allow the occupants to debus without breaking their legs and without having to worrying about a vertical tail rotor getting damaged. H-19 and H-34 pilots sometimes had to be a little more choosy about landing sites.
I got to poke my head in one down at the Pima Air and Space Museum. As much as I love the H-34 Choctaw, the H-21 is a bit more spacious.
