Many trees were harmed in the making of this film!

Lulz. Those trees were comin' right for 'em!
I'm diggin' the MG-34. It pained me to see the FM 24-29 flung down the hill. Ouch!

According to photos, there were mostly ex-German weapons used by the FLN, or at least that what was captured. But they also used anything else they could manage to acquire, even including a Lewis Gun. It is interesting to note that, at the time (the 1950s), Luger pistols were still a commonly used military handgun in a few places. In at least one case, they continued to be used until replaced with Glocks.
The NRA Museum has or had, a display on movie guns. There have been some clever things done to produce a working movie prop gun. But rubber guns are also used in movies, too, maybe especially used to be flung about.

It does sort of look like one. He did say he fought in Italy during WW2.
