A friend of mine from Confederate reenacting days says he knows someone who has a Mas 36 for sale. The story is that the gun is unissued but missing spring, follower and bayonet. I have not seen it yet. Owner lives some 50-60 miles away. I do not know what year it is but it does NOT have the grenade launcher set up. The owner is not at home now and will have to check the gun when he gets home to see what year it is. IF the thing is all he says it is, what is it worth? My friend says the man got it for $250 a short time ago. I feel sure he isn't looking just to get his original purchase money back, of course.

Sarco, Numrich, and Apex Gun Parts all have small parts. The problem will be the bayonet, but I do see a few on fleabay. Providing you get the missing parts in-order, I'd jump on it at that price, presuming it's in good or better condition.

If the man wanted to basically get his money back, I might've bought it already. He definitely wants more than that. He wanted me to make an offer. I said I couldn't do that until I knew the year of manufacture and saw it. So far, he has not responded, which makes me a bit leery of this deal. I find it odd he doesn't know the year it was made since if it is pre-WW2 make as is claimed, it is stamped on the stock. Also, if it is unissued, which could possibly be so, I don't know why he hesitates to send pics of the gun. I tend to think is has been refurbished and is not the age he says. Pretty rare these days to find an unissued WW2 rifle of any sort. It does happen but it doesn't happen all that often. In any event, I was curious to know what the crew here thought it was worth. I haven't walked away from this possible buy yet.

MAS 36s aren't as cheap as they used to be. A quick search on gun broker shows current bidding on post war models from $455 to $600. Be careful of folks that don't know what they have. I've seen a lot of MAS 36s described as WWII era that aren't. Rule of thumb, if it has an integral front sight hood, and a Berthier style front sling swivel, it's post WWII. If it has an integral grenade launcher, it's a 36/51 and is only appropriate for Algerie.
Condition is everything. Make sure it's in a condition that you're comfortable with.
