Hi ran across this pic in " THE LAST VALLEY " thought it was interesting, everything on line that I could find said only about 1000 mle 44 went to Indochina. Further that they were issued to Marine Commando's for testing. Then again maybe it's not a mle 44. What do the experts think??

That's a Mle. 49, and those are colonial paras, not Commandos de Marine. The CdM either wore Mle. 47 TTA uniforms or their own distinctive version of the Denison Smock in their specific camo pattern (one of the rarest in the world). I'm not sure when they got rid of the Mle. 44, as all of the pictures of them from Algeria show the Mle. 49.
The Mle. 44's forend looks much like the Mle. 36, with a hooded front sight and no grenade launching equipment. The Mle. 44A is essentially the prototype for the Mle. 49, but it did not evolve past the evaluation stage.

let me ask, does the counter bored muzzel indicate grenade launcher use ,or just to keep the bore brush from wearing. I know a lot of euro rifles were counter boared. Is it even relevant.

MAS rifles were counterbored as a matter of course, not because of any specific damage.

Awesome rifle, but it's one of those that are missin' the grenade launcher. These were refurbed in the late '60's, if I remember correctly.

Second one? You bastard!
Slick diversion. Good luck keeping it quiet on the homefront.
We'll have to get together soon and get all the MAS's out to the range. My brother and I are going out this weekend to scope out Bloody Basin. If not this weekend, there will be plenty of other chances. I'll have my PTR-91 in and my FAL assembled in a month or two, so those will need to be broken in.

ok guys sorry about any mix up. I'm doing a DR prescribed steroid back treatment. Which actually makes me crazy. I get up in the middle of the night and wash windows...... duh.... but ok am expecting another mle 49 with grenade launcher this next week. will post pictures then.
Just got a set of FR Airborne helmet stuff from Normandie.. Kinda looks ok. gonna play around with it. and see how it works. quality seems ok.. Got a guy with an original set but that is too rich for my blood. He has the airborn and the ground force. but.... expensive,, he told me he got them in France.. hey they look good.and real.

I've been sorely tempted to get a Mle. 44 to round out the FSA collection, but then I'd be hard-pressed to fight the urge to create a Commando de Marine impression, which would then lead me on a very arduous quest to snag a good condition CdM smock, which are very rare and very expensive. Sure, I could settle for the Mle. 47 TTA service uniform, but it wouldn't be the same without the smock. This is a dangerous hobby.

Too bad the 49/56 is neutered. Goddamned California idiocy... Apex Gun Parts has grenade launcher parts if you ever have the opportunity to make the rifle whole again.
Despite having the CR39- of which I am most envious- we just might have to keep you around if you keep posting cool stuff. If I didn't have a bad case of FAL fever, I'd be hot on the trail of another Mle. 49. The one I have only has 49/56's to keep it company. I'll take it to the range this weekend to show it some love, though. Cheers!
