Hi,
which types of Sherman were used by the French? I have only seen pics of 75mm Shermans, never any with the 76,2 mm gun. And what´s about ex British tanks?

Frank:
'Les Cavaliers Et Les Blindes' didn't have any Sherman details. 'Vietnam Tracks' mentions 'remanufactured' M4A2s of the Regiment Blinde Colonial d'Extreme-Orient during the Battle of Black River in December 51.
They also mention the Sherman offered no advantage over the Chaffee as the Sherman had a much higher ground pressure which restricts it's mobility on soft terrain.
To counter the potential threat of Chinese armor, the RBCEO was equipped with both M36B2s and Shermans in November of 1950.
Sorry but that's all I have for info right now.

Yes, they were all armed with 75mm guns, not the 76.

I understood that theatre surplus British and American armour were employed by the French. For commonality of ammunition and parts resupply, adding another sized gun to the arsenal would only add to the logistic nightmare. The medium velocity 75mm M3 was a fine gun for fire support but was at a disadvantage in tank on tank combat with a muzzle velocity of 617 metres per second. As the Chaffee was also equipped with the 75mm M3, the administrative burden was somewhat eased.
When compared to the German 75mm tank gun of the Pz IVH, it's gun was 48 calibre and the Panther was 70 calibre, the poor 75mm M3 was only 40 calibre. I believe the Firefly had a 55 calibre gun, British/Commonwealth have a different definition of calibre and it gets ugly.
With that in mind the addition of the M36 Jackson, armed with the 90mm would have done them well against an armour threat.

With no rail infrastructure usable to them, the Viets would have had one hell of a time moving in armor from China had any been available. The roads were hard enough on what trucks they had. Armor+long distances=not going to have a good time.
