The Viet Minh made use of whatever weapons they could find. In the earlier years, that would have been French, Japanese, and smaller amount of British and American-made weapons. No assault rifles would have been in use on either side. Later, the Algerian rebels did use German MP-44 Sturmgewehr assault rifles, but the VM would have been limited to rifles, pistols, submachineguns, automatic rifles, and light machineguns. Russian and Chinese arms started trickling in about 1948 and really started moving in after the Chinese communists gained power in 1949. This book will tell you what you need to know. For your model: Both British and French shorts did not have cargo pockets. Both had two front slash pockets near the hips and a rear pocket on the right side. It would be more representative if the soldier was wearing either Pataugas (chausseurs de brousse) or brodequins Mle. 17, 35, or 45 instead of high-top jump boots. Socks would have been rolled down to rest on the very top of the shoe. Your father's story is an interesting one. Bon chance on your project.
