Greetings All, Have just finished the book "EMBERS OF WAR" The fall of an empire and The making of America's Vietnam, by Fredrick Logevall. I found it to be an outstanding read taking the Indochina war from 1945-1959. Covers not only the fighting and tactical aspect but also the political wrangling going on behind the scenes. ( Leaving the troops on the ground to carry the load of their policy making!!!) It is a long read, but well worth the time. SAPPER

I've found The Vietnam Wars 1945-1990 by Marilyn Young to be a well-written (albeit dry at times, mostly due to the topic) and comprehensive political appraisal of the conflicts in SE Asia. This coupled with Ted Morgan's Valley of Death provide tremendous insight into the political shenanigans. I looked into Embers of War, but I think these two books in tandem do a better job of piecing it all together and keeping the happenings in Indochina in better context with local, regional, and global events.

My local library has Embers of War and I very much liked it, but I still think that Bernard Fall's writings are the best available for Indo (yes, even better than The Last Valley by Windrow, which almost cuts and pastes/plagiarizes text in many places from Fall's Hell in a Very Small Place). A book I haven't read in many years is The Ugly American, which has a story about a French unit (I need to find out if it is true or what part of it is true) in Indo using Communist tactics against local Viet Minh units. Anyway, I need to read it again soon

I just wanna make sure I get a wide view of things. One of my other major focuses is the Texas Revolution, and the wife will periodically ask me how many books I have on the Alamo. I just laugh and ask her in specific, or Texas history in general?
