Hi,
my newest project is a 81mm Mortar.
I have the mortar tube (cut in two and rewelded), an uncomplete bipod (may ex-jugoslavian) and a partly rebuilt baseplate, maybe also from ex-jugoslavia).
Now an important question: Were the 81mm Mortars used by the French mainly US or French made. There are some differences between them, and I have to know it before I start to repair and complete the mortar.
I have 2-3 pics which French Mle 1927/31 are used, and the French started to build them again in 1945 for some years.
The first event for my mortar will be our Indochina event in May 2014.

Think there US 81mm mortars, which they copied from the French design.

I remember reading that most of the mortars used in Algeria were French. I don't know if that's because industry had finally caught up and the US ones were phased out, or if it was like that in Indo as well with French tubes prevailing.

I have now ordered US parts for finishing the mortar.
It is for display only, but we are thinking to insert a sort of blank fire possibilty, black powder or so.

Propane is also an option if you just want it to make some noise.

Propane would be a problem here in Germany because all items with gas systems have to be proofed by the technical control association (TÃœV).
But we have to think it over, maybe a removable device...?

You may need to go back to the drawing board and replan, your looking at this from the wrong end... As they say it's all smoke and mirrors..

Blackpowder weapons or devices need a special blackpowder proof certificate...
