Good day
Thanks for hosting the forum, I've been a history buff since childhood and enlisted in the Canadian Military after high school. 14 days from now I will retire with having completed 33 years.
I started re-enacting Vietnam after having primarily re-enacted the Second World War. I've been drawn to French-Indochine as a natural branch of the Vietnam war and often the toughest lessons are often lost.
Thanks as well for allowing me onto the forum.
Salut, Steve

Salut Steve,
welcome to the forum. Yes, the US didn´t learn from the French. Maybe it is better to learn by mistakes?

Salut Steve, welcome to the forum. Yes, the US didn´t learn from the French. Maybe it is better to learn by mistakes? Be Frank The US was quick to implement tactical lessons- the importance of logistics (something the US has been known for for a while) and the viability of air mobile/air assault warfare- lessons learned from France's colonial adventures. These lessons did not extend in full form to the strategic level. Welcome Steve! I'm primarily interested in the Algerian War, but I hang around here for the interesting info. Cheers!

Gents:
Thanks for the welcome, I look forward to both reading and learning more about the conflict that is so often forgotten.
Last Thunder Over Michigan, both Cliff and I attended with a small display on the enemy force of the second Vietnam war.

I didn't get to the last one, unfortunately.
When I was there in 2012, I was thinking how awesome it would be to have an Algerian War air assault demonstration. Just need a couple H-34 Choctaw helicopters and some willing participants to play both the French and fellaghas. ;D
I'm in Metro Detroit, by the by.

With which CF unit(s) did you serve, if you don't mind me asking?

I started out in 81 in the Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians) our western armour regiment. In 83 I went to Germany and since then I have been with the Royal Canadian Dragoons. The RCD were in Germany until 87 before returning to Canada.
Detroit, go Red Wings. I just hope Hockey town can bounce back. I have family in Windsor although I'm up in Owen Sound.
Algerian war, sounds interesting as long as our fellaghas don't look to much like bolt action equipped Taliban.
Today was the day that I turned in my ID card for the military.

Groovy. Thanks for your service.
As for Detroit: Let it rot. The politicians will never be held accountable and the citizenry will never wake up. Nothing will change. Anyway, enough of the politics. ;D
Owen Sound's a nice little town. I really enjoyed visiting Bruce Peninsula NP a few years back. If I could have my own island in the Georgian Bay and be left alone to do what I want, I'd be pretty close to heaven. Windsor's twenty miles away and I haven't been there in a decade. Guess I should fix that. I used to love Patrick O'Ryan's Pub.
The Algerian rebels were far more European-ized than the Taliban, and most were not extremists.
Cheers mate!

Lew
Let's hope you can make it to TOM 14, we're planning on bringing our crew along.
The Peninsula is great, some fantastic motorcycle roads to boot.
Windsor is going through some hard times as well, at least they have the Vietnam veterans wall.
Algeria is another conflict that I'm starting to read up on, ties in nicely with the 1st BEP.
