Legionaire, Haven't seen any MAT 49 parts sets in years. This is the closest thing I know of, MAS 38 parts sets at Sarco; www.sarcoinc.com/davespage1.htmlScroll down to the part set...... If you happen to ever run across any MAT 49 sets, let us know!!!! Renault

Chances are the VM were using them at DBP. It would be better for an earlier impression. I'm not gonna say you wouldn't have seen one there in French use, but I imagine it would have been rare.... I would have probably ditched it for a MAT 49 at the first opportunity! ;D Well designed gun, just a crappy caliber! Most of the French troops had been updated by then to the MAT 49's. Renault

Was at a Militaria show over here in the UK (Malvern) at the weekend and saw a old spec (cocks and dry fires) deactivated MAT 49! Was the later type with the star stamp on the trigger and they wanted 1,350.00 GBP = 2,243.26 USD for it Wish I could have found the money, re-mortgage the misses and Jeep maybe lol! Danny

We know that already.
It stares me in the face every day, knowing that Nolasco have these on offer so cheaply. However, the small obstacle of the English channel sits in the way. Not to mention the British customs and import restrictions placed on international firearms (even deacts). Were I to import a French deactivated firearm into this country without the proper license I could face a hefty fine and/or a jail sentence. I have been to all of the big deact arms dealers in the UK and they wouldn't help me. They only seem to be interested in importing from the Russian Federation. And unless I ordered about 50 MAT49's they said it wouldn't be economically viable for them to do it.
I'll just have to stick with my collection of MAS rifles for now.
Don't even get me started on the hunt for a CR39...

It defently is hard for us UK reenactors to find french weapons! The major dealers aren't interested as they see them as limited interest and most of all dead money when they can sell Thompsons and Lee Enfields to every GI Joe and Tommy at shows. Even the small de-act dealers and licenced armourers aren't interested because as Cookie puts, it wouldn't be economically viable for them to do it, I was so close to a FM 24/29 Danny

Will have to check out Nolasco ... but I cant see paying 800.00 plus shipping for a deactivated weapon. Howver, MAT49 parts kits *ARE* available at gunshows if you can find them. Sad part is, the parts kits that were available through SARCO are all gone but can only be found from dealer-to-dealer. I spoke with my local gun shop before I moved across town (Republic Firearms) and he told me that the MAT49 parts kits are so rare now that only certain dealers have them, and will probably hold on to them due to the rising price for them.
The only suggestion I would have is to build one from scratch (I talked to my SF friend about this a while back; we are going to start our CR39 project later this year). He said it is possible, but you would have to machine all the small parts and it would probably look hokey at first. I still beleive its possible, it would cost a hell of a lot less than the going price for the deacts. Houston, Texas is a machine shop paradise. I am having a fitness machine made for me for less than $1,000 by my brother. I showed him the MAT49 and he said, "well its doable, but your going to need the small parts machined properly - if you can find someone with the time, its possible. About $400 a pop."
I will keep you guys apprised on how we go with the CR39. We are going to working off of MAS36's that will be cannibalized as well as other French weapons parts.

Just when all seemed lost... This little baby popped up on 'Arundel Militaria'. Cue mad dash, frantic telephone calls and a flurry of emails... £750, which to be fair is very reasonable considering they are as rare as rocking horse shit round here. Just need a sling now.

Of course I did, who would I be if I didn't???
I was on night shifts over the weekend with no internet access at home or at work. A friend spotted it on the website and emailed them for me to reserve it, but we weren't sure when it had been put on and if anyone had beaten us to it. No answer on the phone or email (it being sunday of course) and a tense 48hrs ensued. I finished work, drove to the old folks and fired up the internet. One call, bought and paid for. Overnight shipping. So it should be here tomorrow AM!! I was very suprised it was still there to be honest.
Anyone know anything about which pistol grip it has? Early or late?

Cookie,
Great job!
I can only sit here in Houston, Texas and twittle my fingers and sigh!
I've been looking for a MAT49 parts kit now for two years ....
Laugh of the week. One of our new members in the unit called a local gunshop here in Houston today. Texas. TEXAS! We are the land of guns! He asked the gentleman behind the counter if they had, carried or would order a MAS36 boltaction rifle. The gunstore salesman said, "Whats a MAS36?"

Unfortunately, we have the same mentality here about "all things French" that you find elsewhere in the U.S. Yet, when you ask someone about the French Indochina War ... they stare at you with that quizzical look of, wha?
I've been able to talk to about a dozen veterans and civilians here so far -- all of whom had *NO* clue the French were even in Indochina. One gentleman who served and is a decorated Marine Corps veteran in Vietnam (who I talk with on a weekly basis), stated that he beleived the French were dropped into DBP directly from France to help the Viets fight the Communists. I explained to him that the French and Viets had been fighting a massive Communist onslaught since 1945/6 with only slight material help from the U.S. He never heard of Na San, RC4 or Muong Pa. All he knew was, "the French lost at a place called Dien Bien Phu."
I explained to him (and others) that the French *nearly* won - Giap spoke to a French reporter in '92 and made the people's mistake of speaking freely and said that his troops were "near collapse and near mutiny" at the end of the battle. Had the US delivered a maximum pasting onto the hillsides with B-29 strikes - the battle would have been over. Ho would have been forced to march back into China to regroup, the French would have left, the Viets would have .... its all would haves....

My MAT arrived a short while ago. Its really nice.
Suprisingly enough it was deactivated by the London Proof House on November 13th this year and was imported by 'Falcon Gun Company' of Kent, UK. For it to have been imported and deactivated so recently someone must have imported a few of them to make it worth it. I did a bit of searching around and found another one of these MAT's for sale by D&B Militaria - it is £1,450! ($2,700) For the same spec gun as I got for £750! I caught a lucky break with this one - as much as I wanted this baby I would never pay that much for one. I would have been sitting there staring at it every day, longingly, like in the Waynes World movie...
Absolutely nuts. You could get a mint MP44 assault rifle for that and they are about the most expensive items around here!

I don't know how US customs and Importation laws work but as far as the UK goes if you wanted to buy a foreign weapon, preferably already deactivated abroad (say in France) I would have to go to someone with the correct license to import weapons and get them to do it for me. In this country outside of the Government and its contracted suppliers there are only a small number of gunsmiths, armourers and suchlike available. These mostly deal in hunting rifles and shotguns for commercial sale (sports/hunting/farming). There are a handful of UK armourers who supply blank firing weapons to TV, film and event organisers. They have a license to import blank ammo, guns and other restricted items such as parts. If you could persuade one of them to import a gun and send it to one of our two 'proof houses' where guns are tested to be safe (or deactivated) then you could do it. The downside is the whole thing would be very expensive. The armourer would have to be paid enough to make it worth their while. The shipping would have to be paid and the deactivation at the proof house as well. You would also not know what condition to weapon would be in when it got to you. The overseas dealer could charge you a load of cash and send a real junker. What would you do? send it back? Believe me I went through all of this to no avail, and it turns out someone DID import a load of MATs right after I gave up trying. Maybe they heard about my quest and felt pity? I believe the USA has an anti terrorist law which restricts the importation of guns these days?

They usually have zillions of MAS 36 and thousand of MAS 49/56 at gun shows. Seems the supplies are drying up and they are being replaced with Ruskie bolt guns. Gunsamerica.com, gunbroker.com, or auctionarms.com are always good places to look for any French arms. Good luck finding a MAS49 tho! Chicken teeth are much easier to locate....

Received today Birmingham certificated post 95 deac Mat 49. Welded trigger and internals but safety and cocking lever free. Foresight tunnel snapped off but sight and sling loop present. If anyone can source a sight assembly at a reasonable price I would be interested. Mag uncut so will take inert rounds and came with a sling. All in all a bit tired looking but am not complaining at £425 including postage at over £25.
