marsouin,
I have a question: we use the title "PARAS INDOCHINE" on our website. Is that correct, or should the title be, "Paras d'indochine"?
Many thanks for your help.

Jean-Pierre Pissardy uses "Paras d'Indochine" for the title of his two volume work on that subject. Until the appearance of Editions Indochine, under Cyril Bondroit, Pissardy was by far the best unit military historian of the war in that you got not only the history, but tables of airborne operations, windows covering specialized subjects such as the origins of the ARVN airborne, SAS etc. Likewise, he includes TOE information (though Gaujac also does this), color plates of unit insignias, and copies of unit citations. His Commandos Nord-Vietnam 1951-54 was then very first comprehensive work on the subject, and no surprise it was published by Ed. Indochine, which also published a biography of Vandenberghe, the preeminent commando operations practitioner in Indochina.
Anyway, I tend to "paras d'Indochine" simply because Pissardy used it, and it sounds 'correct' to my tin ear.

I would say it is a direct translation: agreeable (the English stole it from the French...)

To be exactly correct in French, the letter "d", or "d' apostrophe is missing between the word Paras and Indochina, but, we are not in France...and the Administrator of this forum is still the boss here ! My 2cents however : The Indochina conflict happened during the colonial time, most of the regiments or bataillons in the 1950 were named with the word "colonial "attached to it. like the 1er or second Bataillon Paras Colonial or Bataillon Etranger Parachutiste Colonial .Everything changed after the Algeria war anyway, the lezards fatigue colors went away, bataillons were renamed, new badges came along as well, the Paras legend in Indochina was born and never went away.To the young generations they are the knights of Plaine de Joncs, les soldats de Dien Bien Phu are an icon that everybody respect and admire in France. I would called it "Paras Coloniaux d'Indo' in memories of all the colonials infantry and airborne regiments who fought there. But that's me, I am just a soldier for now !
