I believe on the East Coast there is a cematary where some English Sailors are buried that has been forever England , here in Wis South East Asian Vets have their own Car Plates , as for the American Legion and VFW they did not exactly welcome American Viet-Nam Vetrans the VFW at first said since Viet-Nam was not a Declared War it left it up to local chapters to decide wether to admit Viet-Nam veterans , this was all after the WW 1 vets worked so hard to get the G I bill for the WW 2 vets , I declined to join the VFW or American Legion , I joined the Viet-Nam Veterans of America and the Marine Corps Legue

fmf,
Great post - thanks for sharing that with us - and thank you for your service. Its sad the larger organizations are so combbative. One Australian veteran on the mil.com website posted that Australia not only allows the building of memorials to South Viet soldiers ... its veterans actually seek out displaced immigrant Viets to join its group as fully fledged members. Except for Special Forces and several small, regimental-based groups, our larger veterans organizations seem to be quite xenophobic about the Vietnamese veterans. The reception Marshal Ky received onboard the deck of the USS MIDWAY after the fall of Saigon in 1975 is pretty much the reception the ARVN vets have faced in our country ever since.

--- UPDATE ---I spoke with the City Manager, City of Wichita KS last week. The Mayor of Wichita, Mayor Carl Brewer gave an passionate speech in favor of the South Vietnamese memorial to ARVN veterans for the park. The speech can be found on the Wichita KS city website: www.wichita.gov/Government/CityCouncil/Mayor/I spoke with the City Manager for 45 minutes and was heartened to hear that the city was not only in favor of the memorial but will help get it built [ the Viets have 60% funding toward the memorial ]. I then spoke with the Post Commander of the American Legion in Mulvane, KS who sponsored the vote. He told me that the issue has been very heated at times. However, the Legion voted AGAINST the memorial, as he told me on the phone, "...the park is only for those who are Americans." I disagreed with the Post Commander and told him so, but am glad to report that the AL will be helping the Viets build their monument. The AFCWA will be helping sponsor a fund drive for the Viets on our website this week; we will carry a link directly to the Wichita-area Vietnamese community.

Merci for the update and status of this issue Martini! Sad when you think about it...the Vietnamese went to war at the urging of the American government, many of them ending up adopting the US as their home country after leaving South Vietnam and now they cant even get a memorial to their war dead without inflaming thick skulls.

Doc, its a crying shame really.
When Maj vande Grift, CMDR Bryant and I were invited out to the ARVN Remembrance Ceremony [ at the backing of Representive Vo, a Vietnamese-American Texas State House Rep. ] back in June, the planning committee for the event invited just about every American veterans group in Texas, sent out press releases to local print, radio, internet and t.v. media ... and no one showed. Our band of three were the only American veterans present. The same thing occurred with our Thu Duc ARVN Infantry College Officers event on July 4th.
Why didn't anyone show?
One veteran I have known for donkey's years finally admitted to me over the phone several weeks ago: "The Viet thing? Yeah, I heard about it Mick. A cold Bud Light and BBQ won the day."
Sigh.

WOW!!!!! I just got back from Wichita last night after visiting the daughter and her family!!!!!!!!!! And drove down close to Mulvane Ks. Man I wish I'd known!!!!!! Ran into bunches of Patriot riders (many from Mulvane) there at the old car show Saturday in Augusta Ks! There is also a "French" Cemetery at Yorktown! Being that 3 out of every 5 soldiers at Yorktown was French, it stands to reason! ;D Don't get me started! Here in my hometown, one of my Boy Scouts was shot up back during the rush on Baghdad. (Naturally he was a Marine!). Matter of fact the daughter ran into him shopping one day outside Pendleton at the Oceanside Wal-Mart while he was awaiting orders home. Well the old rancher I worked for ( a retired USMC Lt/Col who is like a granddad to my kids), and past commander of the local VFW post, tried to get him some recognition and was going to get him in the post was run off by all the old %#$#^*(^ of the post who stated "he was not in a real war", so he didn't deserve to be a part of their VFW post! Basically this destroyed the old man..... All this burns my a**!!!!! Renault PS, My looks like my son-in-laws little brother (USMCR) will ship back for his second tour in the winter........ Semper Fi, Chad!

Here in Central Wis there was a VFW American Legion Post that sold its Building a few years ago , they did such a good job of keeping out the Viet Nam Vets that their membership dropped to only a few old guys , it is to bad because it was one of the first Posts in the country and had roots going back to the GAR , they still meet at a local lodge the last I heard but it is a shame what happend there
