I have begun laying plans to build a MAS36 CR39 folding stock turnbolt rifle. A former SF officer who is an artist and sculptor will help me design the weapon and allow folding stock. He helped design, prep and build a wooden M16 for one of Ross Perot's Vietnam War statues many years ago. As a former SF Officer, weapons expert, his knowledge is invaluable. The only info on the net on the weapon I can find was the blurb on the shle website: shle.org/WEAPONS_CR39.htmland www.littlegun.be/arme%20francaise/artisans%20m%20n%20o/a%20mas%2036%20gb.htm... which has been posted here before. The weapon will be display only, but the key here is to make the stock adjustable with the integral sling spring loaded like original. The bolt will turn, but thats it.

Worthy venture Martini! Next to the Great War, M1917 autoloading Berthier conversion, this model is probably one of the rarest models to come up with! The one that was on Gunbrokers several months ago was basically ID and a parts gun. But you know, that may be the only real option if one wants one of these rather elusive rifles! Even a parts gun can fill the bill. Keep us updated on your progress.
Another thing. Continually check with the old standby "SARCO" for parts!!!! They may occassionally turn up some. They have a habit of doing just this!

I am bird-dogging SARCO and another half-dozen parts suppliers to see if I can pick up what I need. Housing assemblies, spare bolts, wooden stocks. Collectors Armory here in Houston once carried MAS36 parts; I'll have to go by there and see if they have anything left in the backroom. I know the barrel and stock is shorter, but I think this can be remedied. The alloy folding stock may just end up being the easiest part to make.

Cookie,
Thanks for those links. I had not seen that link for the CR39 in French.
I just spoke with the gentlemen who is going to help us get this project off the ground. He is a former SF officer [ Vietnam 1969-70 ]and helped design and scratch build an M16 for a large Vietnam War statue for Ross Peret in Dallas for one of Ross's many Vietnam war projects. I talked to my friend the other day; were going to sit down and lay out the numbers on the 39.
We will cannibalize a MAS36 for parts but because the 39 is significantly shorter were going to have to cut and strip. The bolt action and the folding stock will work but the weapon will be a non-gun mainly for displays and photo shoots. It's going to take some time, but I will be taking pics along the way to keep everyone apprised of our progress.
The first step is purchasing the MAS36 that will be cannibalized for parts.

Bonsoir:
I was fortunate enough to recently acquire a CR39. Unfortunately it was missing the Integral sling assembly and sling. Does anyone have any thoughts on where to go to get something like that and what the assembly and sling look like?
Merci,
Legionnaire

Here is the link that has an exploded schematic and some closeup photos of the sling assemblay for the CR39.... armesfrancaises.free.fr/les%20fusils.htmlscroll down to the CR39 and click on the photo....it will take you to a page that has more photos and the schematic. It may help find what you need for the sling appearance. Doc

It appears that the CR 39 is a tension type of housing for the sling so that it unrolls when the stock is folded out and rolls up when the alumiinum stock is folded....at least based on the schematics.
I love this type of research, LOL.

Merci Doc.
That is a great site. Now I know what it should look like. Finding out where to find one will be a challenge.
Thanks again!

I have seen few pictures of the CRS in action. If the troop has a bolt gun, it is usually the MAS36. Would make a nice conversation piece but not worth the time and effort, especially if you have to ruin a good 36 to get there. I would alter my 36 as it shoot dead on at 100yds even with old ammo.

Gents
Great links, thank you. So who is going to mass produce these for us?
