A few weeks ago, in a fit of boredom, I took pics of myself in various impressions. Now that I've got em' I might as well post em'! The pocket hanger is "theatre made" (in this case by myself, not Mama-san) and I imagine the dimensions are waay off. Back French conscript, Algeria. Just posting this one for intrests' sake. Back. Omaha's sells these canteens as "Indochina" out of a 54' dated crate but I don't ever recall seeing them in pictures.

Great Pics Woodard!!!! You are well on your way. You do see TAP 52 canteens late in Indochina, like late 53 thru 54, and definitely in Algeria.
Keep up the good work!!!!!!

Nive pics, Woodard! The last pics show the typical Algeria consript. Very nice! A nice detail is the shortened Enfield P-17 bayonet-dagger! If I were you I would try to add a piece of British equipment, for examle a P-37 basic pouch with a belt loop at the back of the pistol belt. With best regards, Turner

Since everyone was so prompt and helpful, I decided to do one more, a Vietminh one. It consists of me in a Chinese M-1950 uniform (like the ones worn in all those 308 division pics from Hanoi in 1954) with a padded vest (a little tight on me, and I'm tiny), Parachute material cape (actually folded double, it's enough to make a hammock or lean to), scarf, and a US trouser belt w/ a carbine pouch for my mauser (a PPSh would be awesome, but the Mausers come from the same source as the uniform). The only thing I really need is the little basket hat, I have some detailed pics of an orig and I think with some practice and a good website on basket weaving I could make one.

Just noticed as I posted it, please ignore the carbine mags in the pouch.

Good effort, but I would do away with the white T shirt.

Merci Beacoup everyone! Charlie, I got the padded vest off of e-bay a while back. I can do a thread with detailed pics of it under the Vietminh section. I had some good pics of the inside of the bamboo helmets but I don't know what happened to them.
Cookie, the T-shirt didn't even occur to me, I did a lot of self-pics that day and remember changing back and forth betwen OD, Army brown, and white T-shirts but didn't think to do without.
On the subject of undershirts, would anyone happen to know when they switched from rolled collar undershirts to the 1" knit collar that they have today?

For the undershirts I would say sometime towards the end of the Algerian war or thereafter.
An OD coloured singlet vest, a tan shirt, or nothing would be far better than a T shirt. These were very much a US item of clothing until the late fifties. Of course the Bataillon de Coree were issued US clothing and some would have still retained US vests and T shirts in Indochina.
I would also do without the multi pocket grenade pouch for Indochina. Much more frequently utilised were British 37 pattern universal ammo pouches with altered belt loops on the rear. That or 30's era French FM24/29 magazine shoulder bags. Also TAP Mle 50 suspenders were issued first to the airborne. They only started to really get issued to the infantry in late 53 to 54. You would be better off with US M36 suspenders.

When I get a chance I'll post those pics up along with some other stuff on a Vietminh section thread. I've also requested some Vietnamese language materials through interlibrary loan so hopefully they'll have some good stuff. A while back I was researching Chinese in the Korean war and was able to score a unit history with hundred of pictures, almost none of which had been published in the US. No guarantees, though!

Woodard, I just noticed on your profile that your first name is Bren... you wouldn't happen to be an active Korean War era Chinese reenactor would you? I think I've seen your images on the Korean War Message Board. I also have a PVA kit, on the off chance that Korean War reenacting ever takes off in Texas... what I'd REALLY like to do is KW U.S. GI, but I know that if KW ever came around here, the shortage of Opfor would necessitate my commie participation...

That's me. I have been trying to figure out how much the Chinese supplied the VM since I did so much research on the Chinese during this period. Most of it is posted in the KW forum in some form or another.
We've done 2 Korean War events so far. Not sure if we could pull off an Indochina one, the GI's at our event spent the weekend doing first-person and I think we'd loose them trying to be French.
