Was just wondering since I've seen it on video ... if the black beret was an issue item to the GCMA, or to certain AVN units in particular. I've seen various pics of the beret worn in ECPAD.FR photos from the period but could never figure out the unit of the person wearing it.

I know Muong tribal soldiers serving with the french wore black berets with a Moroccan style star badge on them. Bigeard is pictured in 1951 being awarded a unit standard and he is wearing a black beret in that, with a TAp badge on it.

I think there is a color plate of a Muong striker in one of the Chappell books; I was taking a close look at a GCMA video on youtube showing black berets in abundance....
I will link it when I can...

I would also assume that they would be multi piece berets with large crowns.

The black beret was certainly worn by the majority of Commandos Nord-Vietnam units, as shown in numerous black and white, as well as color photos in Jean-Pierre Pissardy's "Commandos Nord-Vietnam 1951-1954" published by Editions Indochine under Bondroit's direction.
