This is Hollywood at it's finest! If they really are seriuos about a FIC or VN movie they need to get Schoendoerffer. Least he was there. But then us Americans wouldn't know what to do we actually saw an authentic war flick. Gotta love 'em! Renault

It angers me each time I see that scene and knowing the excrutiating detail the producers went into with the assault in the I Drang Valley, one would assume [ never assume ] that they would treat the French with as much respect.
Your correct, and I hate to say it: Hollywood. How americaine.

You muct remember that I was on the set of that other Mel Gibson travesity (sic?) to Historical fact, "The Patriot". What a complete and utter dog!!!!!!!!! It could have been a good movie. But directors are just one tiny step above full moron! You wouldn't believe the stuff they had us do on that movie! Many did get fed up and left.... There was also this big pissing match between some of the really dyed in the wool 18th century reenactors (who did know their stuff) and the almighty "Smithionian". And there was a lot of friction between the stock company fill ins (they follow movie productions around from westerns to ACW To Rev war) and all they basically do is change hats! O didn't know there were that many "Bowie" knives in 1780 South Carolina! ;D That flick treated the Brits like "We Were Soldiers" treated the French.... Appalling!!!!! There were some really good parts in WWS. But unfortunately it wasn't most of the combat scenes. Some of that stuff looked like 1950's "B" movie footage........ The biggest problem I had with "WWS" was the terrain!!!!! SE asia my A**! They didn't even attempt to make it look right! And then the end with the "Cujo, Chopper from Hell" scene! That was just insulting!!!!!!!! Renault

On top of all that, they only told half the story. Everything I've read says that the fight for LZ Albany was even hotter than the fight for X-Ray.

And they also leave the audience with the impression that all of GM 100 was massacred!
Argh!

A better opening for We Were Soldiers may have been either 3e REI's defence of Phuong Doan, II/2e REI's defence at Na San or the "mini Camerones" during the Day River offensive, all of which were tactical French victories, but strategically a win for the VM.

YOU CAN'T SHOW THAT!!!!!! The French actually fighting !!!!!!!! The entire 9 year campaign in Indochina was one French defeat after another!!!!!!! Remember? I'm shocked that you would think differently Martini!!!! ;D Yes, but that's not keeping with the theme of the movie. Mel Gibson and the entire US Army coming to SE Asia and doing the impossible!!!!!! The other bug bear of mine about that scene is that the VM are armed with SKS's. The chinese PLA didn't even have them at that point!
I watched 'The Quiet American' the other day. They show French Colo's, at Phat Diem, wearing an approximation of what was worn in the Indo war. They actually get a good showing in the few scenes they're in and are armed mostly correctly too. That was a Hollywood film, so I guess there are some sympathetic directors out there.
