Hi all, I think I've seen photos of paras with rolled blankets strapped under the lids of their rucksacks. Anyone else seen this? I was wondering if there was an issue sleeping bag by this time, or were blankets still the norm? Cheers, LeM .

LeM:
I am thinking, but am unsure that the British issue Denison sleeping bag would have been used in some configuration; remember the nights in Upper Tonkin would have been cold. Other than that, it would have been the usual U.S. / French issue with various configurations of sleeping bags or several blankets sewn together if there were not any s/bags present.

LeM and all ...
Just checking back on this post to see if anyone has discovered a French Indo-china-era sleeping bag...

It's hard to say what they are, but in many photos you see either shelter halves or ground sheets folded under the flap of musettes.
As for rucks, it's usually pretty hard to guess what they have in 'em! They hold a lot of stuff, and you can really cram 'em full. Personally I carry either a USGI shelter half or a French zelt in my rucksack. They tend to be a bit more versatile for me than a blanket.
I've seen one pic from DBP, Battles in Focus series by David Stone. Page 70. French union troops on the move and it appears like they have every type of sleeping and small tentage accessory imaginable!!!!! Hard to say, but they could be sleepin bags, Those French sleeping pads, ground sheets, shelterhalves, extra clothes, raincoats, the works! They are moving a lot of rolled up gear on their backs.

Hello,
I think they could have WW2 US Wool Sleeping Bags but not really in operations. We found lot of US sleepping bags with french "sac à viande" into. Maybe used in indochina or algeria ?
On the operations i think they have only poncho / tent. In indochina for the paratroopers ponchos are generaly made with German camouflage cloth. Like square of WH or SS camo. The french army campure in germany lot of stock of german camo and cut them into squares for making the French paratrooper ponchos.
If i remember this question i will try to ask a friend in september. He was in indochina into the Parachutistes Coloniaux SAS.

Blankets were by far the more common sleeping accessory all the way until the end of the Algerian War. That said, I do have a French copy of the US M1942 sleeping bag. I threw out the outer shell, as it was hardened and simply unusable. I've only seen a couple pictures of the inner, wool bag in use in Algeria, so I'd assume the distribution pattern would probably be similar in Indochina.
