Since I last posted I got given a copy of La Legion Etrangere De 1945 A Nos Jours. On page 37 there's a picture of three legionnaire in a jeep and the driver looks like he might have this style of camo Chapeau de brousse . There is also a picture, on page 19 of 6 Chapeau de brousse and the ones on either end look to be camouflaged.
I'll see if I can get a good scan over the weekend and post it.

I finally got around to scannin' those pics. The driver is the one that looks like he's wearin' the camo version. I hope these scanned well enough. Even in the book it's tough to see clearly.

Those chapeaus de brousses are painted, not printed fabric. The ones worn by 2e RPC were the same deal- painted.

Thanks Lew, it was tough for me to tell from the pictures.

Don't worry, my eyes are wrecked from trying to determine.
The pattern on those hats and those used by 2e RPC are basically identical, accounting for slight variations from soldier to soldier. The pattern looks remarkable like the modern ATACS camouflage, sans pixellation.

After much conversation with Steve on the subject, to the point of his annoyance I'm sure, and much head scratching, I've finally come up with evidence of the lizard pattern chapeau de brousse. The Musee de L'infanterie - AAMI identifies it as Le chapeau de brousse français modèle 1953. So we know they existed, however I'd still like to find photographic evidence of their use. Other than their reference in Windrow, and this website, our speculation is that they either were not popular with the troops, or saw very limited issue, if they were issued at all. Craig

I've had notable success with ebay.com, ebay.fr, and ebay.co.uk in the past. Check them out first and you might get a better price. If you can settle for the TTA Mle. 47/52 or Mle. 47/54 outfits, you'll be fine. If you want the original TTA Mle. 47 set, good luck.

Thanks all. I found a pair on ebay.fr per suggestion. Also Tranchee has them. I've been down in Galvestion the last couple of weekends with fam and always have to go by Colonel Bubbie's, they still have some in the 30 to 34 waist size range, I'm a 38 or 40.

That's what the sign says (and my feelings exactly re end of an era)...... But when I asked about it, it sounded like The Eagles Final Tour Again, they are going to stay open through Labor Day and then evaluate next move re how much inventory is left (apparently a lot of stuff in warehouse) internet sales only, limited hours, limited days.
I've been going there for 25 years and have purchased some really neat items and wish some of those items I had purchased in depth. it's the last of the surplus dinosaurs in Texas (I still miss Maneuvers on lower Greenville, it was around in the 1980's).

I made periodic trips to Col. Bubbie's since 1978 or so until I left Texas in 1999. I was always in awe of the sheer numbers he had.Time to go to the website and see what's left.

Thanks to forum member "lew," I bought my Mle 1949 from a dealer on ebay.fr named "plainedesjoncs" for around 20 or 25 euros.
He was really nice (I mistakenly ordered something else and he was gracious enough to remove it from my invoice) and my package arrived in just eight days after my purchase. Shipping was quite reasonable (just over 10 euros, and that was also with a few other small items I purchased). The hats are reproduction, by the way, in case anyone was wondering.
The hat is very well made, and it actually fits (I have a rather enormous head, at size 61-62). The only thing that's not "perfect" (in my mind) on it is the snap, but it's no big deal.
There are a few other ebay dealers (in the U.S.) that sell hats size 59 and under, for between $25 and $77 plus shipping (National Capital Historical Sales or "nchs" is one of them).
By the way, now or soon is the time to buy stuff from Europe, as the euro is currently at $1.08 to $1.09 US dollars...but I read in some financial magazine that the euro might get down to as low as 80 cents US soon! Whoah...

I bought most of my stuff from France when the Euro was at $1.30. That was unpleasant.

I think that's what got me to finally "man up" and hit the order button from Tranchee, as before I think the euro was even higher then $1.30. It seems to be fluctuating between 1.08 and 1.09 right now, but if it goes to $.80?!? WOW...we're gonna have to swamp ebay.fr and Tranchee with orders!
By the way, thanks for the heads up with the ebay.fr dealer; he was a nice guy and I had my stuff in eight days after placing my order and paying. Got a few small other items sent with the Mle 49 hat and shipping was like $10. The hat fits really well (on my enormous noggin') and I'm even starting to get it "salty" working outside. I haven't had one (that fit) in many years, so it was cool to have one again.

Kein Problem. I'm happy to assist. I like to take one my chapeaus de brousse with me when I go backpacking. Materials have certainly advanced in the last 60+ years, but it has a certain style to it.

Yes, they do! I always get comments on it when I hit the farmer's market wearin' it.

You class act you. They're a bit heavy for tropical use with their heavyweight all-cotton construction, but they're just fine in other climates.

I live in NC, so I am finding they are a bit "heavy" in the heat (and the heat's barely started this year).
But I have had several positive comments on it so far, mostly from fisherman...

What can I say?? I'm such the fashionista... When I think trendsetter, I cast a glance in your direction. We can easily get the heat and humidity here in Michigan you folks in the South get, and the hat can easily be too much. I can see why so many smaller, lighter weight caps were developed- casquette Bigeard and the like.

Nice of you to acknowledge my sense of avant garde. What they call heat and humidity here on the Columbia is nothing like what I had in SE Texas. The chapeau works most all the year. But, yes I can easily see why the lighter caps came about.
